ACSC Annual Cyber Threat Report, July 2019 to June 2020

The ACSC Annual Cyber Threat Report was released last week and again we read that cybercrime is one of the most “pervasive threats facing Australia, and the most significant threat in terms of overall volume and impact to individuals and businesses.”

The report states that the likelihood and severity of cyber-attacks are increasing due to our growing dependence on new information technology platforms and interconnected devices and systems which require new thinking about how best to adopt them securely.  At Haventec we also believe a new approach to protecting sensitive information is key to addressing the weaknesses within the current model. Specifically:

  • Revisiting the need to centrally store sensitive data;
  • Changing the way applications interact with that data;
  • Changing the way individuals, the enterprise and third-parties access that data; and
  • Providing individuals with more control over how their personal information is used and shared.

ACSC continues to identify many products and services being adopted by organisations that lack ‘secure by design’ principles. Applying the fundamentals of good cyber security as individuals, business owners and government agencies is crucial because the report also states that “in many ways Australians are not necessarily learning from past experience.”

Cybercriminals are using sophisticated tools, techniques and have access to underground marketplaces where personal information and other sensitive data, such as compromised user credentials, are easily available.

The report goes on the reveal that many of the methods used by cybercriminals to steal personal information can be mitigated through a variety of measures with a critical one being; multi-factor authentication.

Haventec have developed one of the most innovative and easy to use multi-factor experiences in the market today – it provides enterprises with the means of offering their customers a single step multi-factor authentication – no tokens, no PIN’s sent by SMS, no complex passwords, no password managers, no authentication apps – simply launch the app, enter your secret, and you’re away.
